Devon's Baby Quilt

This quilt was made in February and march of 2002. It was a gift for two friends of mine who were expecting their first baby, a little girl. I made this at the same time as Robert's baby quilt.

This quilt (and Robert's too) is entirely hand-stitched and hand-quilted. Yes, even the squares are pieced by hand. It's made from two types of fabric in a checkerboard pattern. The dark pink squares are quilted in a flower design with the occasional bee. Each of the squares is six inches (finished size) making the final quilt 30 x 42 inches (or, at least, approximately.).

(The picture of the full quilt came out underexposed, so it's not shown here. )

To make the edging, I took the extra fabric from the backing fabric, folded it over, and whipstitched it to the top of the quilt. Today I'd make seam binding and sew that on, but I didn't know how to do that at the time.

The backing fabric is a burgundy/pink that was a close match to the pink fabric on the front of the quilt. (It's hard to tell in the above photo, but the pink on the front is actually a checkerboard pattern.)

In this image you can see the stitching on the back. I found the flower and bee designs in an issue of Quick Quilts magazine.

I like to use brighter colours in my baby quilts, rather than pastels, as I'm told that the contrast of brighter colours is better for infants. Plus I get kind of sick of all the pink-and-blue and want something a bit more striking.
