Cat Hierarchy

November 28th 2007

Cat Tree Trio, originally uploaded by schmeis.

We came home on Saturday night and the cats were sitting like this on the cat tree. I made Scott get the camera, as it is very unusual to see all three up there at once.

It’s accurate, too. Miho is still the princess, defending her spot against Baron, and Tybalt has just decided that it’s his lot to suffer and is way down there at the bottom (his life is hard, meow, meow).

Gym

November 26th 2007

I promised myself a triumphant post when I made it to 10 gym visits in a row, as I did not want this blog to become simply a record of my gym visits.

And then I stalled out at 9 visits in a row, because the gym had no water on Friday, and that meant no shower, and I’m not going to work after going to the gym without a shower, thanks just the same. An

I intended to get up on Saturday and go, and you can imagine how well that went. But I *did* get up and go this morning, so I haven’t lost the momentum entirely.

That makes four weeks of gym visits, only missing two days. And the only other day I skipped it was because I couldn’t lift my legs enough to do cardio. I think that counts as an excuse.

It’s going really well. So I’m posting and talking about it anyway.

I’ve made a couple of changes to my schedule in order to make the whole thing work. Namely, I get up earlier. Every weekday, not just gym days. I use the extra time when I don’t go to the gym to read or write or (more usually these days) quilt. Before I go to bed in the evenings, I set the coffee pot up so that even when my alarm feels horribly, awfully early, the smell of the coffee gets me out of bed. I can face getting up if I have something hot to drink.

If I’m really on the ball, I lay out my clothes the night before and just get up and get dressed and have breakfast lickety-split and have time to linger over my coffee before I get out the door. Usually I’m not so organized, but there’s still enough time between getting up and leaving that I don’t have to rush.

Getting out the door is the worst part. Once I’m on the road to work, there’s no reason for me to stop (unless I forget my work key card, which I did one day, turned around and came back, and *still* went to the gym, because Shithead wasn’t going to win that way, damn it.) I’ve briefly considered some mornings that going to my desk and surfing the net for a while would be good, but really, who am I kidding? Once you’ve gone to the trouble of getting up early and are on the way to the gym, it would be silly to sit at a desk in the same damn building without actually doing the workout.

I don’t know that I’ve lost any weight so far, but I do think I’ve toned some, and certainly I feel like I have more energy, and I feel more on top of things. (Except possibly housework. But when have I ever been on top of the housework?). I’m eating healthier and planning meals better.

So, the count is now back to 1. We’ll see how it goes.

I miss my big grey cat.

November 26th 2007

I was sitting at the table tonight and Miho was skulking after a piece of bread and I made a comment about her wanting baked goods.

And that brought back a flood of memories of Jake, who would climb onto my lap and gently paw at me, begging for a crumb of muffin, or cookie, or bread, or whatever I’d just baked. And the hole that he left in our lives suddenly seems very big, and very deep and very fresh.

I miss him.

Accomplished

November 18th 2007

I was going to do a bunch of housework today, but it didn’t get done.

On the other hand, I made meatloaf a la Luanna for supper, along with a second to freeze, black bean soup (recipe from Canadian Living) for supper tomorrow night (and likely with enough left over for several lunches, or leftovers one night), plus Vege Pate (mostly for use in sandwiches for the rest of the week). On top of that, I have a couple of quick meals planned, so I won’t be stumped when I get home from work any night this week.

I’m quite pleased and thus am not stressing that I didn’t do the vacuuming.

Cooking is more fun, anyway.

Cognitive dissonance

November 16th 2007

Scott has a few days off this week, but I’m still working, which has made for a couple of interesting switches.

On Wednesday, he came to work and met me for lunch. After lunch we said goodbye on the corner and I walked into work.

And then last night, I came home from work to find he’d cooked a delicious supper for us both.

It wouldn’t be so very weird if we didn’t work in the same building, but it’s odd to think “I used to be on the opposite side of this equation.”

This odd thing we call memory

November 13th 2007

A while back, in another iteration of me going to the gym regularly, I was looking for a lock I could take with me. I searched through some boxes and drawers and eventually came up with one that I’d used in high school (and probably also for a year or two in university).

Unfortunately, I’d forgotten to mark the combination on the lock when I put it away, rendering it useless to me, because I couldn’t get it open. Disgusted, I made a mental note to get a lock when I was out running errands, and thought no more about it.

Until later that day, when I noticed that I was walking around muttering a random string of numbers to myself.

Now, I’m a writer, and there’s constantly about a dozen things going on in my brain, and I go around muttering to myself a great deal, song lyrics if nothing else. But random strings of numbers are a new thing, so when I finally noticed what I was doing (which took a while) I said to mysef “Where the heck does this random string of numbers come from?”

And it was as you’ve probably guessed: the numbers were the combination for the lock I’d found just that morning. In some recess of my brain, I still knew the combination. It just took a while for it to float to the surface.

I’ve used that lock ever since, and I never mark the combination when I put it away any more, because I still remember it, now without even having to think about it.

Worst depiction of video games on TV ever…

November 12th 2007

I have one word for this depiction, which uses scenes from Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones …

FAIL

As one of the commenters puts it, games haven’t had levels since SNES. And that’s the least of what’s wrong with it.

I do like how the girl kicks butt at the game, though.

Scott’s been photographing again….

November 6th 2007

Double Helix, originally uploaded by schmeis.

Scott got a new lens for his camera and he’s spent some time wandering around with it on the weekend, taking photos (because, y’know, that’s what you do with a camera). This “double helix” staircase is my personal favourite, but there’s some great stuff over on his flickr site.

I am very much in admiration of his photos. He’s got a great eye for it.

What I’ve been working on…

November 5th 2007

…in spare moments. A crochet bunny. I can now post pictures of it because it has been gifted to the new baby.

Crochet Bunny

I made it from the “Best Bunny Pattern” at the Lion Brand Yarn site. You have to be registered to see the pattern, but it might pop up for a few seconds if you click the link (mine is cuter, for it is in better colours). I wasn’t going to register on the site, but there are a lot of good patterns there if you happen to be into easy crochet.

I know, I know, the ears are adorable. But what really sells it…is the tail.

So much for that…

November 5th 2007

Hmm. The spool of thread that was in my quilting box seems to have disappeared, which means that it’s at home somewhere. And I’m at work. And thus lunchtime quilting must be put on hold.

Ah well. I shall pin things together in preparation for sewing, then. Lunch is almost over anyway.
